Next Catch

A cowboy rides his horse next to a fence and readies his lasso to rope a brown calf.

There’s a lot going on in this photo. The cowboy is directing his horse while swinging a rope to catch another calf. The calves are given their brands and shots before going out on pasture with their mothers until fall.

Note the mud knot in the horses tail. This is a vaquero tradition still practiced in buckaroo country. It keeps long tails from getting tangled up in ropes, and out of the mud and brush.
